Certification

We need accountability. Most other professions have accountability and professional standards e.g. doctors, lawyers, builders, electricians, etc. If they do not adhere to their professional standard they will lose their certification, and are liable for damages in one way or another. IT professionals don’t have a standard or accountability.

This a two-fold problem, one we can get away with poor performance and second, we have nothing to push back on to say that what we know is correct and must be adhered to, much like the designer of a bridge, one wouldn’t say, “we can get away without the steel, just use concrete”

The Board is also likely to be responsible under their duties as company directors, but this is not enforced.

The closest we have today (in NZ) is the ITCP, this should be compulsory for all IT practitioners. See www.itcp.org.nz
